American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society was formed in 1913 by a team of 15 doctors and has grown, evolved, and helped countless people that have been diagnosed with cancer to the society we know today.  The American Cancer Society is the place that you should go to for any and all information on cancer.  They have a call center – the National Cancer Information Center - that is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week (in English and Spanish) to answer any questions or offer support.

The American Cancer Society also offers many publications to patients, their families and professionals.  These publications include:

  • Education brochures on various cancer types
  • Coping Methods
  • Preventative tips
  • Cookbooks
  • Clinical journals for doctors and others in the health field

In addition to the support the American Cancer Society provides to cancer patients and health professionals, it also conducts research.  They are a non-profit organization that has been conducting research on how to prevent, treat, and understand cancer since 1946.

Through community plans and services, the American Cancer Society is hands-on with the public by providing preventative care and early detection to members of the community.  One of the programs the society offers is tobacco control.  Through education, mandates, and other programs they hope to reduce the amount of people that start or continue to smoke.

The American Cancer Society also offers patient services to members of the community.  Through this avenue, they give patients and their families help and emotional support.  They are present from the time a patient learns they have cancer through to the end of any treatment program.

The American Cancer Society is a resource that we should be grateful for and proud of.  As a non-profit organization they help cancer patients and their families across the country.
