Most of us don’t think of eye health when it comes to the overall picture of our well being. The eyes are a very sensitive part of the human body, and need to be cared for just like every other part. There are several different afflictions that can affect eye health. The most common of these are pink eye and styes. Pink eye is a common problem that can be painful and itchy, and it is highly contagious. Fortunately it usually does not cause any permanent damage to the eyes, but it is something that many people catch at one point or another. Styes are small growths that form near the eyelids. These can usually be treated with medication or even outpatient surgery. Cataracts are another affliction that affects eye health. Cataracts usually don’t bother people until they have reached their elderly years, and are often a sign of aging eyes. Today’s modern methods such as laser surgery have proven to be highly effective when it comes to treating cataracts.

Of course, eye health does not have to simply relate just to diseases. Maintaining good eyesight is key to doing day to day tasks such as driving, writing, reading, or working on a computer. It is important to have annual eye exams so that you can be sure you are seeing properly. Some people may require prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses; while others who have poor vision may opt for laser surgery to help improve their eyesight. Scientists have shown that a diet rich in vitamin A can help eye health. Eating vegetables such as carrots actually helps the eyes function better. Good eye health is very important for your safety and your overall wellness so be sure to have regular checkups with your optometrist and eat a healthy diet.
