Placebo Meds Are Fake Medications That Trick the Mind
A therapy that is sometimes used in patients whose illness is more of a mental thought process is placebo meds. Sometimes patients will think about a pain or illness so much that the problem does not go away since it is all in the mind, so doctors will prescribe these placebo meds and the patient will believe that the pills are actually working, and they will work if the patient believes they are and the problem is in the brain. Placebo meds were used frequently in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and they are still commonly in use today. These meds are mainly given to a patient to please them psychologically and not actually benefit them physically. This type of therapy is a form of alternative medicine and also a psychological medication, but it has been proven to work in some patients.
Many of the doctors that will use placebo meds today are psychologists’ and psychiatrists’ and sometimes they will try this procedure first to see if there is a real problem or if it is just in the patients mind. This can be a big factor in the treatment of a patient who has mental health issues and does not know how to describe their problem, and if the patient thinks in their mind the pill is working, it will unless there is a real problem. Most placebo meds are basically just sugar pills or else they are just a gelatin tab, and as said previously it is more of a psychological drug. There have been many studies that have used these placebo medications as well for various tests and they have also been used to help people get off of drugs and other substances that are mentally addictive rather than a physical addiction as some drugs will cause. There have actually been studies where patients who wanted to quit smoking cigarettes were given placebo meds and were relieved of the side effects of smoking, in many of these cases it actually worked for the patient just because they really though it was helping so it actually did help psychologically.
