A situation in which a person's life is at stake due to an injury or illness or long-term health problems is referred as medical emergency. During such an emergency, assistance from any qualified person can be beneficial. However, the victims themselves can control some of the emergencies.

In a medical emergency situation the response strongly depends on the status of the sufferer's health. The response also depends on availability and involvement of the recourses for help. The circumstances are also a factor to consider, whether the victim is under medical attention, or in a place without medical assistance like in the street.

Another important factor that matters is the severity of the emergency and the standard of treatment provided to the sufferer, if any. Depending on the seriousness of the affected person, the treatment may include anything between first aid, multiple levels of care, emergency physicians to specialist surgeons.

Response during medical emergencies

There can be various kinds of responses to the medical emergency. Here are some of the significant responses that should be aptly and timely applied in cases of medical emergencies.

In case of a medical emergency in a spot without medical care, one of the viable ways to provide proper care is to call for the emergency medical services. You can call the appropriate local emergency telephone number like 911 or 999. You should provide the AMPDS to the emergency dispatchers so that they can assess the priority level of the call, and the caller's name and location.

Those of you trained in first aid can also help (keeping to your limitations of knowledge) during medical emergency. However, the time awaiting the next level of definitive care should be kept in mind. Well, if you are not able to assist with first aid, you can remain calm and stay by the side of the injured or sick person.

The tendency to crowd around the victim makes things worse for emergency service personnel, obstructing their working as well as making it more stressful for the patient. This should be avoided for the patient’s well-being.

In case of a patient suffering from medical emergencies like absence of breathing or heartbeat you can try the principles of the Chain for the victims survival in four stages early access, early CPR', early defibrillation and early advanced life support.

If the situation is too hazardous and can harm the patient more if prevented, and evacuating the victim requires special skills. This should be left to the emergency medical and fire services to handle.

Clinical response in medical emergency

In a situation where the medical emergency occurs in a place with adequate medical services the response is prompt and effective. For instance, in a hospital there are adequate staffs to attend average emergency situation. There are also emergency medicine physicians who are specially trained to deal with contingencies; they must maintain CPR and ACLS certifications.

In complex emergencies most of the hospitals maintain protocols to seek for the on-site or off-site staff quickly. The emergency room as well as the inpatient medical emergencies pursue the basic protocol of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Regardless of the nature of the medical emergency, adequate blood pressure and oxygenation should always be kept ready.
